Vote for the Best Packer Fan and Win a Packer Road Trip!

Packer fans are a unique bunch. Not only do they faithfully watch their team (through the up years and the down), but they travel all over the country to see the games. They also buy a LOT of Packer merchandise.

But even more unique is the idea of a fan hall of fame. And the Packers have just that. Every year they vote a new member in. The way it works is like this: People are nominated by themselves or someone they know. The finalists are narrowed down to ten people, and then those folks are voted in by Packer fans.

This year I have the awesome opportunity to interview one of the nominees. She’s Sharon Deutschendorf and was nominated by a wonderful essay written by her son. Do check out the essay and vote for Sharon here. You can vote once a day until November 25th. The inductee will be announced by December 12th.

By voting, you also could win. The Packers will choose one random voter (from either the mail in or online votes). That person will win: A Packers Road Trip for two and a one-year subscription to Packer Plus. The trip includes round trip airfare, hotel and game tickets. Trip will be during the 2009 season.

Now to our interview with Sharon:

I read in your son’s essay that you have 6,000 Brett Favre trading cards? How did you get them all?
Most of them were collected when the boys were younger. We would go to the sportscard shops & I just started buying them here and there. Recently my son Glen bought me quite a few from Ebay to add to my collection.

Tell me about some of the other memorabilia you have.
I have quite a few Brett Favre signed items, including a football, framed jersey, and full size helmet. I have numerous die cast cars and trucks, gameday programs, magazines, books, and ticket stubs.

What was the first piece of Packer memorabilia you’ve purchased?
I have been collecting memorabilia for so long that I couldn’t tell you the first item I purchased. That goes back quite a long way.

What is your most prized Packer possession?
The first signed item from Brett Favre. I have a mini packer helmet that he personalized “To Sharon, Brett Favre”. The only regret is that he didn’t sign it for me in person. An old supervisor got the autograph for me. It was shortly after he became a Packer so I never imagined what type of player he would become.

Any game moments that stand out in your memory?
The Monday night game against Minnesota in the pouring rain. It was the game that went into overtime & Favre heaved a pass to Antonio Freeman. The Viking player almost intercepted it, but the ball never hit the ground. Freeman got up and ran for the touchdown for the win. I was also at the Seattle playoff game where Al Harris intercepted a pass in overtime for the win. The most exciting game ever was of course the SuperBowl XXXI win. I always said I hoped the Packers would win the Superbowl before I died so I got my wish.

Who is your favorite player and why?
Well, Brett Favre will always be my favorite Green Bay Packer, but since he has been traded, my favorite players are now Donald Driver and Greg Jennings. My youngest son is a wide receiver in college so I guess I am kind of partial to receivers :)

What do you think differenciates Packer fans from other footbal fans?
I think it is the small community that they play for. In Green Bay, Packer football is everything. The fact that they don’t have an “owner” makes them unique.

How did you get nominated for the Packer Fan Hall of Fame? What would it mean for you to be elected?
My youngest son Dan who is going to Carroll University as a communications/journalism major nominated me. This is the 3rd year he has nominated me but the first time I have been chosen as a finalist. I can’t imagine winning this. I have been a Packer fan for as long as I can remember. My father taught me to love football and the Packers. He passed away 4 years ago and I would love to see his reaction to all of this. It would mean so much to me to be a part of the Packer Hall of Fame forever.
