VIDEO: Drag Racer Scott Kalitta in Deadly Car Crash
Usually when we post crash videos on Gossip On Sports there’s a happy ending: no one was hurt or injuries were minor and not life-threatening.
Not this time.
NHRA champion drag racer Scott Kalitta was killed Saturday when his car burst into flames during the qualifying round of an event at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. The clip (3ms, 28s) includes footage as well as a tribute.

i love drag racing, but i’ve always felt that funny cars are running “time-bombs”. there isn’t enough protection if the engine blows, or if something like this happens. englishtown’s track does not have enough safety run-out space at the end of the quarter mile.

JD—I’m sure Scott Kalitta’s family and friends appreciate the sentiments of well-wishers like yourself—thank you.
Arnold—Good points indeed. No doubt this tragedy will raise questions about safety in the sport—and maybe result in a positive change where possible.
