The Rams’ Class(less) Action Lawsuit
Here’s an exercise in stupidity futility: Suing the New England Patriots because they beat you in Super Bowl XXXVI.
Somebody please send that in a memo to the St. Louis Rams before they’re laughed out of the NFL. The Rams, who lost the game 20-17, have filed a $100M class action lawsuit against the team and Coach Bill Belichick. On what grounds? Per ESPN:
The suit says: “The basis of this action is that the Defendants illegally videotaped the St. Louis Rams (”Rams”) “walk through” prior to the 2002 Super Bowl for the purpose of gaining an unfair advantage in the game.” It claims the Patriots were engaged in fraud, racketeering, breach of contract, and were in violation of Louisiana’s unfair trade practices and consumer protection act.
This is so ridiculous there’s a plot line for another Dumb and Dumber sequel in there, we can feel it. Do you think the Rams would be suing the Pats if they actually won the Super Bowl that year?
Translation: We want $100M for these Sour Grapes we’ve been chewing for six years.
The Rams are now part of the Superfluous Lawsuits Against the Patriots club, founded by a Jets fan who sued them for “deceiving customers” following “Spygate.”

The Rams (dumb) management ought to be fired. I guess their feeling is……….if we can beat ‘em, sue ‘em. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

It might be absurd but if it gets past the laugh test in court (technically called summary judgment) it might lead to one interesting thing: discovery. You think Goodell, Belichick et al are looking forward to the possibility of sworn depositions?

Kccal–You’re right. Our pal Specter probably woke up with wet shorts this morning after dreaming about another hearing.

The Bee–Stupid indeed.. Next thing you know, every team that lost to the Pats since 2000 will jump on board. (Oops–hope we didn’t give anyone any ideas . . .)

J-Red–Just because we’re laughing doesn’t mean Goodell and Belichick are (though Arlen Specter probably is). Point taken but think of the precedent–does this mean every player/team should sue any other player/team accused of cheating? Imagine where sports would be.
Not to mention, what does videotaping practice truly achieve? At the end of the day, players aren’t going to win anything if they don’t execute, no matter what perceived advantage they have (See the 2007 New England Patriots for reference).
OK, that was WAY too serious for WAY to many sentences in a row. Pardon us as we go get in touch with our inner snark again.

Hey Jodie, Learn how to read. The Rams HAVE NOT sued the Patriots. A FORMER RAMS PLAYER is sueing the Patriots. Big difference!!! You might want to consider some reading comprehension classes.

And you’d do well to take a creative writing class.
It’s called hyperbole. This is a sports gossip blog. We exaggerate. You laugh (or get mad). That’s how it works.
If you want the plain Jane version and all the facts, you’re always free to click on the ESPN link in the post. (We usually provide the “real story” links to ESPN, Fox, SI, or USA Today.)
But hey, we’re glad you’re a fan of the blog and all.
