Fistfights for Peace
Sometimes famous people get a lil’ touchy with shutterbugs. Even surfers, reputedly the most carefree of all athletes, do a Patience Wipeout from time to time.
Eight-time world champ Kelly Slater got to hang with the Israeli fuzz on Saturday shortly after his knuckles didn’t mind their manners with some nosy snappers. Slater had been holed up with Israeli model and Leo DiCaprio ex Bar Rafaeli in a hotel outside Tel Aviv. He was questioned and later released, while his honey Rafaeli got on her Huffy Bike and vowed not bring famous folks to the homeland anymore.
Slater, who might find more than one hamsa (evil eye protection charm) directed at him for the duration of his visit, embodies that special brand of celebrity irony. His trip to Israel was part of an effort to—wait for it—promote peace. The “Surfing for Peace” group with whom he joined forces endorses reconciliation between Palestinians and Israelis.
I feel inspired. I want to use Gossip on Sports to promote peace and harmony in the sports and entertainment industries: ”Blogging for Peace Between Famous People and the Paparazzi.”
Snarkiness for a just cause? That’s just makes us feel warm all over!
Oh wait, nevermind. It’s the space heater next to the desk doing that—phew, false alarm.
