Female or Male Referees in the NFL? You Decide

by Jodie Lynn Boduch on October 24th, 2007

Have you heard? There’s new evidence available to help make the case for female referees in the NFL. Hush now, before you get your jock straps and/or sports bras in a bunch. Gossip on Sports isn’t getting all preachy on you. You know us better than that!

Some would argue that the case speaks for itself:

Before every feminist aware of my puny existence puts me—a fellow chick!—in my place, understand that this is a Halloween costume. The goodfellas over at Best Damn Sports Show Period are showcasing this and other trick-or-treat delights. (This one seems more trick AND treat, so to speak . . .)

Can you imagine what would happen to sports if stodgy, middle-aged male refs were replaced by statuesque, scantily-clad women? Forget the serious political and social consequences—let’s focus on the FUNNY fallout! QBs getting sacked because they were ogling the ref. Excessive use of instant replay so that the menfolk could watch the officials bend over and watch the screen. Catfights between cheerleaders and refs. Players asking to swap digits with the officials after the game. Wives and girlfriends feeling threatened.

The potential for ludicrous, inappropriate, and chauvinistic behavior is endless! Not to mention the societal upheaval it would cause. Wow.

So what’s the point of this? To remind you all how thankful we should be for stodgy, middle-aged male referees. The entire fabric of sports depends on them. Take a bow, gentlemen!

Oh the men in stripes. Depending on the call and which team you support, you either love them or hate them…several times of each during a game. Good post and way to look out for our society and those ole gents on the field!
