Ex-Olympian’s Father Stabbed and Killed in Beijing
The biggest headline of the Beijing Olympics, Day 1, isn’t likely to be about the first U.S. gold medal of the Summer Games going to women’s sabre or Michael Phelps having his first crack at the pool tonight.
Those achievements have been overshadowed by the sad news that two Americans and their Chinese guide were attacked while visiting a tourist site in Beijing.
Todd Bachman, father of 2004 women’s volleyball Olympian Elizabeth Bachman, died as a result of the knife attack. Elizabeth’s mother Barbara sustained life-threatening injuries.
Hugh McCutcheon, U.S. men’s volleyball coach, is married to Elizabeth Bachman. The assailant committed suicide shortly after the attack, which is believed to be an isolated incident.
