Gossip On Sports - The Latest Dish On and Off the Field

A Total Non Sequitur

by Jodie Lynn Boduch on December 3rd, 2007

NOTE: This is not related to sports, so feel free to skip this post entirely if you’re not interested in silliness outside the usual parameters of this blog.

The Bee and I went out with two affiliate members of the Phalanx of Fun the other night. We were at the theater attending a Polish folk group performance. What, you might be thinking, a cultural event? Lookie here, you’re not dealing with a one-trick pony. We have more interests than Derek Jeter has gal pals.

Well, we sat in Row L, which I helpfully indicated to the other members in our party by holding an index finger-thumb “L” to my forehead and saying “We’re in Row L” from 20 feet away.

Anyway, The Bee pulls out his cell phone during the show to take a picture. This usherette, apparently just off the Last Train from Snitsville, hurries over to reprimand him about “no pictures” the second he flips open the phone. There were, oh, a dozen people doing the same thing, but only The Bee got spanked. Whatevah.

Then, during INTERMISSION, The Bee pulls out his phone again, this time to take a picture of the still-down, ornately-designed curtain—with the lights still on and people still talking. This usherette hurries over AGAIN and says, “Sir, you have to put that away! All cell phone and cameras must be off or security will come over!” (Again, a dozen other people were doing the same).

“Quick! Take a picture of her!” I said to The Bee because, you know, I thought it would be really funny to take a picture of her while she was doing her Camera Gestapo routine. But he played it cool and put the phone away just before the curtain went up.

When the performance ended, I suggested walking by this usherette and asking if we could take her picture—hey, the show was over, right?—but everyone wanted to “play it safe.” (What were they going to do, throw us out? The show was over and we were leaving anyway!).

Ah, no big deal. Besides, the usherette was busy. Do you know what she was doing?

Taking a picture of someone.

Very funny, Jodie. It would have been awesome if you went up to her afterwards and asked if you could take a picture with her.

I was thisclose to doing so! Another option was to take a picture of her taking a picture of someone else . . .
