Gossip On Sports - The Latest Dish On and Off the Field

A New Curse for Yankee Stadium, Courtesy of a Sox Fan

by Jodie Lynn Boduch on April 11th, 2008

It’s a big sports day here in the Northeast corridor of the country: the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees meet for the first time this season.

Game time in Beantown is 7pm, but the New York Post (conveniently enough) started the hype first thing this morning. In typical understated fashion, the Post headline screeches, “HIGH’JINX’ HITS YANKEES
CREW SABOTEUR BURIED RED SOX GEAR UNDER NEW STADIUM.”

Over-the-top, yes. True? Also yes. And we love it!

In August 2007, a Sox fan working on concrete crew of the new Yankee Stadium ensured that a Red Sox t-shirt ended up like Jimmy Hoffa. (You know, buried in concrete). But does that explain the Yanks’ collapse last October?

According to the NYP: “The workers say they now fear that they unwittingly helped hex their beloved Bronx Bombers.

‘I don’t want to be responsible for sinking the franchise,’ said a second worker, who witnessed the sabotage. ‘I respect the stadium.’”

Please tell us that’s made-up quote and that there isn’t an actual human being who believes that a $20 cotton t-shirt can “bring down” multimillion dollar franchise. Please?

Anyhow, it should be an exciting weekend (maybe a little facemask action, if we’re lucky). We’re headed to Boston for retail therapy on Sunday and will be on high alert for Yankee sitings as well as construction workers toting around pinstriped NYY shirts looking for opportunities . . .
